  • Description

On July 9 in the wild west atmosphere of festive Calgary, the Queen and Prince Philip watched he "chuck wagon" race - highlight of the Calgary "stampede".

The Queen and the Duke were accompanied by the Mayor of Calgary, Mr. D. Mackay, who gave Prince Philip the white 10-gallon hat he is wearing.

In the race, wagons are driven through a series of barrels, placed as obstacles, and then out on to the track, where they are driven at a furious speed.

Previously the Royal couple visited the old wooden stockade - now a museum - from which the city has developed. They also walked through an Indian village where they met chiefs in full tribal regalia.

The Calgary "stampede" - a week-log rodeo held every year - is billed as "the greatest outdoor show on earth."
