  • Description

From Chicago comes a warning that everybody's favourite decoration at the festive season, the Christmas tree, is an extremely dangerous fire hazard.

At a laboratory run by insurance underwriters, a natural Christmas tree was set alight, and it took only just over a minute to go up in smoke.

The main trouble with Christmas trees is that they quickly become dried out.

Researchers therefore advise householders to get rid of their trees as soon as Christmas is over.

They recommend the obvious measures of keeping cigarettes, candles and matches away from the tree, and in addition suggest keeping a good supply of water in the tree stand, which should be checked daily.

It is also necessary to use lights that are free from defects, and turn them off when leaving home or going to bed for the night.
