  • Description

Visnews filmed this month the swearing in ceremony of Indonesia's first woman ambassador, Miss Laili Rusjad, by President Soekarno at the Merdeka Presidential Palace Djakarta.

For the women of Indonesia, the ceremony was an historic day in their emancipation. Many of her colleagues from the Foreign Affairs Ministry - wearing the traditional sarong and kebaya according to Palace rules - were there to congratulate her. Pride went into the hair styles - a new gold pin or a tortoiseshell comb caused as much flutter in the Palace as a new hat creates in Western countries.

Miss Rusjad was wearing a batik sarong, a green kebaya and a gold shawl of rich embroidery. President Soekarno, administered the oath of office and she repeated the words while a copy of the Koran was held over her head.

From the President, the new ambassador received a tribute: "You are a pioneer in the cause of women." And from friends and colleagues; kisses and congratulations.

Miss Rusjad wanted to become a judge but when Indonesia became independent from Dutch rule in 1945, she ??? joined the Foreign Ministry and served three years in New York as deputy to Indonesia's permanent representative at the U.N. She now becomes envoy to Belgium and Luxemburg.
