    THE ORIGINAL SURVEY, WHICH WAS DONE BY ENGINEERS FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA,IS FINISHED, AND WORK ON THE FOUNDATIONS IS IN FULL SWING.FIVE THOUSAND LABOURERS, WORKING UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF NEPALESE ENGINEERS, HOPE TO GET THIS PART OF THE JOB DONE BEFORE THE MONSOON BREAKS IN JULY 1964.AFTER THE MONSOON, HEAVY MACHINES WILL BE BROUGHT UP TP LAY THE HARD SURFACE, AND WORK WILL BEGIN ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF FOUR MAJOR BRIDGES AND ABOUT A HUNDRED CULVERTS.

    THE ENGINEER IN CHARGE OF THE GREAT PROJECT, VISHNU BAHADUR KARKI, A NEPALESE, IS ABLE TO CALL ON THE HELP OF EXPERTS FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.AT ITS HIGHEST POINT, NEAR THE SANGA PASS, THE HIGHWAY WILL BE 6,500 FEET (1,645 METRE) ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

    BY 1965 THE FIRST TRAFFIC WILL BE USING PARTS OF THE HIGHWAY, BUT IT WILL BE 1967 BEFORE THE ENTIRE PROJECT IS COMPLETE.AND OPEN TO TRAFFIC.APART FROM ITS STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE, THE HIGHWAY IS EXPECTED TO BRING A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE IN TRADE BETWEEN NEPAL AND TIBET.
