  • Description

United States President Gerald Ford arrived in Belgium today (28 May) to a Brussels welcome by King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola and the biggest security operation over mounted at the city's airport.

In a way it was appropriate, because security -- European security -- was the President's first priority during the visit. At the airport, the President pledged his unwavering support for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) prior to attending the Alliance's summit conference the following day.

He declared that NATO must build strong and secure defences as a foundation for its moves towards detente with the Soviet bloc.

A total of 3,000 police, including rooftop sharpshooters, mounted the huge security operation for the President's arrival.
