  • Description

INTRODUCTION: Portugal celebrated the third anniversary of the "flower revolution" on Monday (25 April) that ended half a century of dictatorship.

SYNOPSIS: President Antonio Ramalho Eanes, who as an obscure Lieutenant-Colonel organised the defeat of the Left in November 1975, took the salute at the two-hour march past in Lisbon. In a speech to the military before the parade, General Eanes promised that the armed forces would defend democracy and the constitution in Portugal. Three thousand troops and 500 military vehicles passed down main Avenida Liberdade, or Freedom Avenue. Tens of thousands of people lined the route and waved red carnations -- symbols of the young captains' coup that toppled the dictatorship. But they failed to recapture the euphoria which erupted in the capital three years ago when the crack commando regiments marched past. The commandos were instrumental in crushing the 1975 left-wing military uprising which led to the disgrace of many officers responsible for organising the 1974 coup.
