  • Description

GHANA'S LEGAL YEAR OPENED ON SATURDAY WITH A SPECIAL SERVICE AT THE HOLY TRINITY CATHEDRAL IN ACCRA. IN THE SERMON, THE ANGLICAN BISHOP OF ACCRA APPEALED TO GHAHA'S LEADERS TO SPEED UP THE PROCESS BY WHICH INNOCENT DETAINEES COULD BE RELEASED.

THE BISHOP, THE RIGHT REVEREND RICHARD ROSEVEARE, ALSO SAID THAT PUNISHMENT FOR THOSE PROVED GUILTY OF CRIMES DURING THE OUSTED REGIME OF PRESIDENT KWAME NKRUMAH WAS AS URGENT AND NECESSARY AS THE RELEASE OF THE INNOCENT.

GHANA'S CHIEF JUSTICE, MR. JUSTICE AKUFO-ADDO, LED A PROCESSION OF MEMBERS OF THE BENCH AND BAR FROM BISHOP'S HOUSE TO THE CATHEDRAL BEFORE THE SERVICE.

AS THE PROCESSION ENTERED THE CATHEDRAL PRECINCTS, THE POLICE BAND SOUNDED A FANFARE. AT THE ENTRANCE THE LEGAL MEN WERE MET BY THE PROVOST OF THE CATHEDRAL, THE REVEREND A.K. NELSON.

BISHOP ROSEVEARE, IN HIS APPEAL TO THE RULING NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, WENT ON TO SAY: "IT IS COMMON JUSTICE WHICH IS SOUGHT, NOT VENGEANCE."
HE SAID HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WERE TAKEN INTO PROTECTIVE CUSTODY AFTER THE COUP LAST FEBRUARY.
