  • Description

BRITAIN TODAY (THURSDAY) MOVED TROOPS INTO THE NORTHERN IRELAND TOWN IN LONDONBERRY WHERE CATHOLICS AND POLICE HAD BEEN BATTLING FOR THE THIRD SUCCESSIVE DAY. ADDITIONAL BRITISH TROOPS WERE LANDED AT THE BALLYKELLY ROYAL AIR FORCE BASE IN NORTHERN IRELAND. THE DECISION TO USE TROOPS EVOLVED OUT OF TODAY'S MEETING BETWEEN BRITISH PRIME MINISTER WILSON AND HOME SECRETARY JAMES CALLAGHAN AT AN AIR BASE IN THE WEST OF ENGLAND. AT THE SAME TIME, THE IRISH REPUBLIC TO THE SOUTH SENT TROOPS TO ITS BORDER WITH THE NORTH.

THROUGHOUT MUCH OF TODAY, POLICE AND RIOTERS BATTLED IN LONDONBERRY'S CATHOLIC SLUM OF BOGSIDE. ALL DAY LONG, POLICE EDGED FORWARD, SHIELDS HELD ABOVE THEIR HEADS TO FEND OFF PETROL BOMBS AND STONES RAINED DOWN ON THEM FROM BLOCKS OF FLATS.

POLICE RESPONDED WITH TEAR GAS SHELLS WHICH MOVED RIOTERS BACK FOR A SHORT WHILE UNTIL THE BOGSIDERS FORMED UP AND CONTINUED THEIR ATTACKS UPON THE POLICE. AT ONE POINT, AN IRISH REPUBLIC FLAG WAS RAISED OVER THE SCENE.

AT LEAST 160 POLICE HAVE BEEN INJURED AND TOTAL CASUALTIES ARE BELIEVED TO RUN INTO SEVERAL HUNDREDS. MOST HAVE BEEN HIT BY STICKS OR STONES OR BURNED BY PETROL BOMBS.

THIS AFTERNOON, MR WILSON AND MR CALLAGHAN MET AT THE AIR BASE OF ST. MAWGAN IN CORNWALL AND DISCUSSED THE CRISIS IN NORTHERN IRELAND. HIGH ON THE LIST WAS THE USE OF BRITISH TROOPS WHICH THE NORTHERN IRELAND GOVERNMENT HAS ALWAYS REGARDED AS A LAST RESORT, WITH ITS ATTENDANT ??? BRITISH RULE. MR WILSON TOOK TIME FROM HIS HOLIDAYS TO ???
BUT THE DECISION TO USE TROOPS WAS REACHED AND, AS TROOPS MOVED INTO LONDONBERRY, OTHERS LANDED AT THE BASE IN BALLYKELLY AFTER FLYING FROM ENGLAND. THE TROOPS IN LONDONBERRY, REPLACING THE POLICE, BROUGHT PEACE TO THE BOGSIDE BATTLE AREA -- FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 50 HOURS.

TO THE SOUTH, IRISH REPUBLIC TROOPS HAVE BEEN MOVED TO THE BORDER AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE IRISH REPUBLIC HAS SAID THAT THE TROOPS ARE TO BE USED TO SUPPORT FIELD HOSPITALS IN THE BORDER AREAS THE HOSPITALS WERE ORDERED TO THE REGION LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) BY THEIR PRIME MINISTER JACK LYNCH TO AID INJURED FROM NORTHERN IRELAND RIOTS.

SIX HUNDRED IRISH REPUBLIC TROOPS WERE MOVED TO WITHIN 25 MILES (40 KMS) OF LONDONBERRY.

FIVE FIELD HOSPITALS HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED IN THE BORDER AREAS AND A NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY CROSSED THE BORDER FROM NORTHERN IRELAND INTO THE IRISH REPUBLIC TO TAKE TEMPORARY RESIDENCE IN MAKESHIFT REFUGEE CENTRES -- AMONG THEM A CHURCH.

TONIGHT, WITH LONDONBERRY RELATIVELY QUIET, VIOLENCE SPREAD ELSEWHERE IN NORTHERN IRELAND, AND FOUR PEOPLE HAVE REPORTEDLY BEEN KILLED TWO WERE SHOT DEAD IN BELFAST, THE CAPITAL.
