    THE AFRICAN CONTINENT NOW HAS A THIRD FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE - THE LATEST, INAUGURATED ON SUNDAY, IS IN ZAMBIA AND ITS BASE IS AT NDOLA AIRPORT. THE SERVICE JOINS THOSE IN OPERATION IN EAST AND WEST AFRICA AND LIKE THEM IS INSPIRED BY THE AUSTRALIAN FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE PIONEERED IN 1927.

    THE AIRCRAFT IN USE IS A PIPER AZTEC NAMED THE MUSHINGASHI. IT WAS HANDED OVER BY MRS. GRACE MATOKA, DIRECTOR OF THE ZAMBIAN RED CROSS AND THE WIFE OF THE HEALTH MINISTER OF ZAMBIA. THE SERVICE WAS INITIATED BY THE PRESIDENT OF ZAMBIA. AS WELL AS HIS PERSONAL DONATION, MANY HAVE BEEN GIVEN PRIVATE AND THE GOVERNMENT CONTRIBUTED GBP10,000.

    THE FLYING DOCTOR IS DR. JAMES LAWLESS AND THE PILOT IS MR. ANGUS MACKENZIE, A SCOT OF NDOLA. IN ADDITION TO THEM, THE PIPER CARRIES TWO RED CROSS NURSES AND UP TO THREE PATIENTS.
