When Finland met Russia in the first leg of their World Cup soccer match in Moscow a fortnight ago, they came away narrowly beaten by two goals to one. But any hope of a home victory in the Helsinki return match on Thursday was crushed within the first furious twenty minutes.

The power-packed Russian forward line ruthlessly exploited a bewildered Finnish defence. One - two- three- four - five..
cracking goals were in the net before a capacity crowd had time to properly settle down.

By half time the score was 7-0. At this point the Russians decided their wasn't much point in rubbing in the humiliation too much. After the interval, with little interest left in the game, they contend themselves with three further goals.

Finnish spectators wondered how their national team had achieved such comparative success in Moscow. For here, the Russians looked twice as fit and infinitely faster and more polished.
