Background: Operation "Storing Express", one of the biggest exercises ever staged by the North atlantic Treaty Organisation, has been going on in waters in the eastern and western Atlantic and off the Norwegian coast.
The exercise, with 300 ships and 700 aircraft taking part, is designed to test Nato's northern defense. At least 64,000 men from ten of the 15 members nations are involved.
The are from Canada, Denmark, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Britain and the Untied States.
Western intelligence sources have claimed that at least 22 ships and 14 submarines of the Soviet Navy have been carding out monitoring exercises on operation "Strong Express" since it began on 14 September.
The two-week exercise will be climaxed by an amphibious landing by troops on Norwegian coastal targets.
Vessels taking pats includes strike carrier and amphibious groups, comprising Britain's last surviving aircraft carrier, HMS Ark Royal, with the commando carrier HMS Albion, the USS Mount Whitney, the USS Fortsnelling, and the USS Inchon.

At least 64, men are involved from ten of the fifteen member nations... Canada, Denmark, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Britain and the United states ...and the task of keeping them supplied is an extensive one, on which helicopters are playing a major part. Close support for the operation is being provided by aircraft from Britain's only surviving aircraft carrier, HMS Ark Royal.
Climax of the exercise will be an amphibious landing by a force of soldiers and marines on Norwegian coastal targets.
