Four men exploring a cave in the Ardenne region of Belgium have been trapped in the cave for more than 48 hours by floodwaters. There has been heavy rain in the area and water from a flooded river poured into the cave. The men were said to be cold and hungry but otherwise all right.
The four men, members of a Brussels cave explorers' club, went down into the cave on Sunday (February 8). Rising water cut off their way out and rescue workers began to search for them.
Pumps were used to try to lower the level of water in the cave, and outside the cave rescue workers built up sandbag walls. On Monday a frogman reached the four men after getting through a fifty-foot (15 metre) stretch of water. They were safe in an upper part of a high gallery. It was hoped to bring the men out within the next 24 hours.
