  • Description

NEARLY 600 AMERICANS WERE EVACUATED FROM CYPRUS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) FOLLOWING OVERNIGHT BOMB EXPLOSIONS AT THE U.S. EMBASSY IN NICOSIA.

CHARTER AIRCRAFT FLEW THEM FROM THE ROYAL AIR FORCE BASE, NICOSIA, TO BEIRUT IN FIVE AIRLIFTS. THE REMAINING 400-ODD AMERICANS IN CYPRUS ARE EXPECTED TO BE FLOWN OUT TOMORROW.

THE U.S. AMBASSADOR, MR FRASER WILKINS, WHO SAW THE FAMILIES OFF, DESCRIBED THE BOMB ATTACKS AS "COWARDLY".

HE THOUGHT THERE WAS A GENERAL FEELING AMONG GREEK CYPRIOTS AGAINST THE U.S., BUT ADDED: "IT CERTAINLY DOES NOT REFLECT THE VIEW OF THE CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT."
