  • Description

VOTERS IN EASTERN NIGERIA AND PARTS OF LAGOS WENT TO THE POLLS YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) TO ELECT 54 MEMBERS OF THE COUNTRY'S 312-MEMBER FEDERAL PARLIAMENT -- 51 IN EASTERN NIGERIA AND 3 IN THE FEDERAL TERRITORY OF LAGOS. FINAL RESULTS ARE EXPECTED TOMORROW.

TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY-SEVEN LEGISLATORS WERE ELECTED IN LAST DECEMBER'S CONTROVERSIAL GENERAL ELECTIONS, THE FIRST SINCE THE COUNTRY GAINED INDEPENDENCE FOUR YEARS AGO.

THE DECEMBER ELECTIONS WERE BOYCOTTED BY THE UNITED PROGRESSIVE GRAND ALLIANCE (UPGA) ONE OF THE TWO MAJOR POLITICAL GROUPS. UPGA ALLEGED IRREGULARITIES DURING NOMINATIONS. THE RIVAL NIGERIAN NATIONAL ALLIANCE (NNA) OF PREMIER ALHAJI SIR ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA, EMERGED VICTORIOUS WITH 198 SEATS.

THE APPARENT LACK OF ENTHUSIASM FOR YESTERDAY'S ELECTION IS PUT DOWN TO THE FACT THAT THE OUTCOME WOULD NOT AFFECT SIR ABUBAKAR'S COMFORTABLE MAJORITY. UPGA IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE ITS LEAD.

THERE'S BEEN NO REPETITION OF THE VIOLENCE WHICH MARRED LAST YEAR'S ELECTION. LAGOS ITSELF HAS BEEN CALM AND PUBLIC MEETINGS AND PROCESSIONS HAVE BEEN BANNED FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS.
