    DELEGATES FROM MORE THAN 100-COUNTRIES -- INCLUDING 18 AFRICAN -- WERE TREATED TO A JAPANESE EVENING WHILE IN TOKYO FOR THE SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE WORLD ASSEMBLY OF YOUTH (WAY).

    THE EVENING WAS DESIGNED TO SHOW THE OVERSEAS GUESTS SOMETHING OF JAPANESE CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS AND, ESPECIALLY, THE ATMOSPHERE OF JAPANESE SUMMER FESTIVALS. THE GUESTS WATCHED THE AWA DANCE FROM SHIKOKU ISLAND AND THE HORSE DANCE FROM THE AOMORI REGION; THEY LISTENED TO THE HACHIJO DRUM BAND - A FOLK SONG WHICH ORIGINATED ON HACHIJO ISLAND, SOME MILES AWAY FROM TOKYO CITY. AND THEY JOINED THE TRADITIONAL DANCERS TO HELP CARRY AROUND THE BALLROOM THE OMIKOSHI, OR LITTLE SHRINE.

    THE WORLD ASSEMBLY OF YOUTH IS MEETING IN TOKYO FOR ELEVEN DAYS. THE FINAL SESSION IS DUE TO BE HELD NEXT SUNDAY AFTERNOON (21 AUGUST). WAY IS AN ADVISORY ORGANISATION OF UNESCO -- THE UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANISATION. THE THEME OF THE TOKYO ASSEMBLY IS "YOUTH AND THE DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE".
