  • Description

Severe drought continues to exist in many parts of India. Among the areas most heavily affected is the state of Rajasthan.

The failure of successive monsoons has greatly curtailed the summer crop, mainly rice and coarse grain, and residents of these areas have relied in past weeks on the buffer stock of 9 million tons of grain, which India had built up over the last four years.

The buffer stock is now depleted, and the monsoon rain has not yet arrived. Some villagers in Rajasthan have been fortunate in being able to grow and harvest some wheat. Others make do with whatever they manage to get from the government.

Relief is expected to reach these drought-hit areas soon. This year's winter wheat crop from the Punjab and Haryana has been good. A total of 30 million tons have been harvested, over three and a half million tons more than last year's crop. Throughout this past week, the Indian government has been rushing this grain into Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, the worst hit area.
