  • Description

British Army helicopters were involved in a new-style Berlin airlift yesterday (Wednesday) -- dropping supplies of sweets to orphans in the Western sector of the city.

Two helicopters with British Army crews took part in the drop, showering down sweets for nearly 500 children in four different orphanages.

Ground controls had been set up at each dropping zone to ensure the safety of the children. After the drop, the helicopters came in to land and the children took turns in climbing aboard for a pilot's eye view of the flying controls.

It was the first time that British Army helicopters have been used for such a purpose -- in fact, it was reportedly the first time the Army has admitted operating helicopters in Berlin.

The man behind the idea, Major Freddie Legg commanding the Seventh Aviation Flight, commented: "We thought this would be a nice and unusual way of giving a surprise to children who miss so much in life."
