  • Description

In Ghana, the first crops have been harvested in the "Operation Feed Yourself" programme.

On Tuesday (8 August) volunteers were out in the fields on Michel Camp farm - on the road between Tema and Kpong.

Five hundred volunteers are working on the farm, and for their labours they get free board and lodging and a token salary of one cedi(about 30p sterling) a day.

Among the foodcrops grown on the Michel Camp Farm are peppers, okra, onions, cassava, and water melon.

The crops harvested are sold to the Food Distribution Corporation and the Ghana National Trading Corporation.

"Operation Feed Yourself" was launched by Ghana's National Redemption Council after it came to power in January's coup. It relies on voluntary labour to cultivate lands and harvest crops in freshly-developed areas. Michel Camp Farm covers 640 acres (259 hectares), of which about 415 acres (167 hectares) are already under cultivation.
