  • Description

INTRODUCTION: South African journalist Eric Abraham, who was been under house arrest in Cape Town as a so-called banned person since last November, has arrived in England after escaping across the border from Botswana. He had been confined to his home from 6 pm to 6 am each day, and all day at weekends and public holidays. Under the banning order he was allowed no visitors, except a doctor when necessary, and his parents. He was restricted to his home area in Cape Town, and was not allowed to associate with more then one person at a time or to attend social or political gatherings. Mrs. Abraham, who once set up a news agency convening black African affairs in South Africa, received an average of four death threats a day from extremists, he said.

SYNOPSIS: Speaking to Visnews reporter Paul Toulmin-Rothe at the London headquarters of Amnesty International, Mr Abraham talked about the reason for which he believes he was persecuted.
