    THE TAIWAN, CHINA, ARMY MISSILE BATTALION SUCCESSFULLY FIRED APR 26 TWO "NIKE-HERCULES" MISSILES, SUPPLIED BY THE UNTIED STATES, NEAR TAIPEI. THE FIRING - PART OF THE SECOND ANNUAL SERVICE PRACTICE - LAST UNTIL MAY 17.

    A SINO-AMERICAN JOINT EVALUATION TEAM JUDGED THE PERFORMANCES, WHILE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WATCHED THE FIRING 1,000 YARDS AWAY FROM THE PADS. THE MISSILES SCORED DIRECT HITS, TWO MINUTES AFTER LAUNCHING, ON JET-PROPELLED AIR TARGETS FLYING AT 70,000 FEET ALTITUDE AT 600 MILES AN HOUR.

    THESE TARGETS WERE AN IMPROVEMENT ON PREVIOUS ONES USED FOR TESTING GROUND-TO-AIR MISSILES. THE PREVIOUS TARGETS WERE FLYING AT 300 MILES AN HOUR AT 40,000 FEET. THE EXERCISE WAS TO TEST THE ABILITY OF THE MISSILE BATTALION IN EVENT OF AN AIR ATTACK.

    THREE OTHER MISSILE TESTS ARE PLANNED.
