  • Description

President Muhammad Daud of Afghanistan arrived in India on Monday (10 March) to begin a four-day state visit. While there he was expected to ask India for more support in the current dispute between his country and its neighbour, Pakistan.

He was greeted by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and wasted no time in getting down to business. He met President Ahmed for discussions a short time after his arrival and later in the day had two hours of private talks with Mrs. Gandhi.

Since achieving power by deposing his brother-in-law in July 1973 President Daud has restored the issue of the alleged mistreatment and suppression of the Pathans and Baluchis in Pakistan to a central place in his country's foreign policy.

The territory inhabited by the Baluchis and Pathans -- especially in the north-west of Pakistan -- has been the subject of bitter wrangling in the past and tensions between the two countries have again been mounting during the last few months.
