Background: In Italy, twenty-five people are feared dead after an explosion demolished two floors of the main hospital in Parma on Tuesday (12 November). Sixteen bodies have been recovered from the wreckage and rescue workers hold out little hope of anybody pinned under the rubble surviving the bitterly cold night. Nine patients and medical staff are still missing.

SYNOPSIS: The cardiac and intensive treatment wing of the hospital was destroyed in the blast. Emergency services worked through the night of sleet and freezing wind, in an attempt to dig out people from the rubble. Gradually the cries fro help dwindled and rescuers thought it unlikely that any more victims of the explosion would be dug out alive. One survivor, Teresa Lamagni, a seventy-seven year old woman patient was released from the wreckage after being trapped for sixteen hours. She is now in a critical condition in hospital with severe head injuries.

Police were still sifting through the wreckage to try and discover the cause of the explosion. A spokesman for the Fire Department said preliminary investigations suggested the blast took place in one of the ultra-modern operating theatres. He said a leak from an oxygen cylinder could have formed an explosive mixture with other gaseous liquids. The National Directorate of the Communist Party was meeting in Rome when the accident occurred. In a statement, it urged a speedy inquiry into the explosion and the implementation of stricter safety controls in hospitals, to ensure that similar disasters are prevented.
