  • Description

PORSCHE CARS FINISHED ONE, TWO AND THREE AT BRANDS HATCH TODAY (SUNDAY) IN THE BOAC 500 SIX-HOUR RACE. THE WIN PUTS THE GERMAN MANUFACTURED INTO THE LEAD OF THE WORLD SPORTS CAR MANUFACTURERS CHAMPIONSHIP.

THE WINNING PORSCHE 908, DRIVEN BY THE SWISS ACE JO SIFFERT, COVERED A RECORD 227 LAPS. THE TWISTY CIRCUIT SUITED, THE MANOEUVRABLE GERMAN CARS, WHO WERE ALL OUT MAKE UP FOR THEIR FAILURES IN THE ZARLIER ROUNDS OF THE WORLD SPORTS CAR CHAMPIONSHIP HELD AT DAYTON, FLORIDA, AND SEBRING IN GERMANY.

IT WAS A CRACKLING START. FIRST AWAY WAS THE NEW ZEALAND DRIVER CHRIS AMON DRIVING THE FERRARI 312, BUT SIFFERT SET A SCORCHING PACE AND SIFFERT HAD LAPPED EVERYONE EXCEPT HIS TWO TEAM MATES, VIC ELFORD AND GERHARD MITTER. THE PORSCHE GRIP ON THE RACE WAS NEVER RELAXED.

THERE WERE MANY WITHDRAWALS. FORMER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DENNY HULME WITHDREW HIS FORD PROTOTYPE BECAUSE OF LOW OIL PRESSURE. AT THE TIME HE WAS LYING SIXTH. JACK BRABHAM WHO WAS TO DRIVE THE FORD PROTOTYPE, DID NOT START AFTER TROUBLE IN PRACTICE.

SPECTATORS IN THE GRANDSTAND SAW THE SWEDISH DRIVER JO BONNIER DRAGH. HIS LOLA HIT THE GRASS BANK, CARTWHEELED SEVERAL TIMES, AND CAME TO REST SHEDDING SMALL PIECES IN THE LAST HOUR OF THE RACE. BONNIER WALKED FROM THE WRECK, BUT WAS PUT ON A STRECHER AND TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE GRAND PRIX MEDICAL CENTRE. HIS CONDITION IS THOUGHT TO BE NOT SERIOUS.

AT THE FINISH, THE VALIANT CHRIS AMON DROVE FERRARI INTO FOURTH PLACE. HE'D BEEN IN HIS ATTEMPT TO CATCH THE PORCHES BY A PIT STOP TO CHANGE A TYRE, AND BY THRILLED THROTTLE IN THE CLOSING STAGES OF THE RACE.

FOR PORCHE, THE WIN WAS A GREAT RELIEF, AS THERE HAD BEEN LAST MINUTE IGNITION TROUBLE IN SIFFERT'S CAR BEFORE THE START.

    THE PLACINGS WERE:
1ST CAR 53, DRIVEN BY JO SIFFERT AND BRIAN REDMAN
