  • Description

Soviet Foreign Minister, Andrei Gromyko, arrived in Frankfurt today (Friday) for a brief round of talks with his West German counterpart, Walter Scheel. Mr Gromyko is the first Soviet Foreign Minister ever to visit West Germany.

The Soviet Foreign Minister arrived from East Berlin where he met on Thursday with East German leader, Walter Ulbricht, and Foreign Minister, Otto Winzer. Mr Gromyko, accompanied by his wife, was met at the airport by Herr Scheel and officials of the Hesse State Government.

Accompanying Mr Gromyko was the daughter of Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin, Ludmilla, and other Soviet officials.

Mr Gromyko waved briefly to crowds of reporters and cameramen before climbing into car for the II-mile (17 kms) trip to the carefully guarded Kronberg Castle Hotel for his talks with Herr Scheel.

Herr Scheel told journalists just before the Soviet Foreign Minister's arrival that the talks would centre largely on Berlin. The net round of Four Power negotiations on the future of divided Berlin are due to begin next Thursday (November 5).
