  • Description

SPAIN DEFEATED FINLAND 6-0 IN A WORLD CUP SOCCER QUALIFYING MATCH PLAYED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) IN THE SHADOW OF THE ROCK OF GIBRALTAR. THE MATCH TOOK PLACE AT THE NEW GENERALISSIMO FRANCO SPORTS COMPLEX, BUILT ON THE FORMER NO-MAN'S LAND BETWEEN SPAIN AND GIBRALTAR, BEFORE A BANNER-CARRYING CROWD OF 22,000.

THE MATCH, IN THE GROUP SIX QUALIFYING SERIES, WAS THE FIRST PLAYED AT THE NEW GROUND. NEITHER TEAM HAD A CHANCE OF QUALIFYING FOR NEXT YEAR'S FINAL -- BELGIUM HAVING WON THE GROUP COMPETITION EARLIER.

THE PLAY WAS ALL SPAIN'S IN THE FIRST 45 MINUTES AND THE FANS ENTHUSIASTICALLY SPURRED THEIR TEAM ON AS THEY TORE THROUGH THE FINNISH DEFENCE TO BUILD UP A LEAD OF FIVE GOALS.

BUT AFTER THE INTERVAL, THE SPANIARDS BEGAN TO LOSE THEIR SPEED AND ATTACKING ABILITY.

THE GAME DETERIORATED INTO A DULL DISPLAY, WITH THE SPANISH TEAM KICKING THE BALL AIMLESSLY FROM MAN TO MAN.

THE FINNISH TEAM WERE UNABLE TO BREAK THROUGH THE SPANISH DEFENCE. ANOTHER GOAL IN THE SECOND HALF GAVE SPAIN AN UNTROUBLED 6-0 VICTORY, WITH GOALS BEING SCORED BY PIRRI, GARATE (TWO), VELAZQUEZ, AMANCIO AND QUINO.
