Background: United States soldiers in Viet Nam found a hidden Viet Cong ammunition dump and munitions factory located 20 miles northwest of Saigon on Monday (August 7.).

The Viet Cong had left in a hurry. They buried grenades, shell casings, and machinery in streams and marshes. The grenades and casings were used to contain bobby traps, and the machinery was for making the traps. The U.S. troops were members of the 25th Infantry Division; eight per cent of the division's casualties have been caused by Viet Cong booby traps. The factory itself was dug up in bits and pieces as the Viet Cong had buried it. Many times before, U.S. soldiers had passed over this area. U.S. military authorities say that the Viet Cong had probably successfully hidden their factory and its products from the U.S. troops.

Parts of the factory were later examined at the battalion command post. U.S. military authorities say the factory was large enough to manufacture several hundred booby traps daily, and as a result of the find, future Viet Cong booby trapping will be slowed for a while.
