THE DESTROYER, THE 1,200-TON (ABOUT 10,800 KGS) FARAMARZ, IS THE LAST TO BE BUILT BY THE VOSPER THORNYCROFT GROUP FOR THE IRANIAN NAVY. TODAY'S CEREMONY WAS HELD AT VOSPER THORNYCROFT'S WOOLSTON, SOUTHAMPTON, SHIPYARD.

PRINCESS SHAMS PAHLAVI IS THE ELDER SISTER OF THE SHAM OF IRAN. THE CEREMONY WAS ATTENDED BY A NUMBER OF GUESTS REPRESENTING THE IRANIAN ROYAL FAMILY, THE IRANIAN EMBASSY IN LONDON AND MANY BRITISH OFFICIALS.

THE FARAMARZ HAS AN OVERALL LENGTH OF 310 FEET (ABOUT 90 M.) AND IS POWERED BY TWIN ROLLS-ROYCE OLYMPUS ENGINES. THE SHIP HAS A TOP SPEED OF ABOUT 40 KNOTS AND CAN OPERATE WITH THIN DIESEL ENGINES FOR LONG-RANGE CRUISING AT LOWER SPEEDS. THE DESTROYER IS FITTED WITH CONTROLLABLE-PITCH PROPELLORS AND STABILIZERS.

THE SAAM, THE FIRST OF THE FOUR IRANIAN SHIPS, LAUNCHED IN JULY LAST YEAR, IS IN THE FINAL FITTING-OUT STAGES AND WILL UNDERGO PRELIMINARY SEA TRIALS IN AUGUST.
