  • Description

A UNITED STATES BOEING 707 OF TRANS-WORLD AIRLINES WAS HIJACKED BY ARAB COMMANDOS WHILE ON A FLIGHT FROM ROME TO TEL AVIV VIA ATHENS AND FORCED TO LAND AT DAMASCUS ON FRIDAY (29 AUGUST). THE COMMANDOS, A MAN AND A "STRIKINGLY BEAUTIFUL" GIRL, ORDERED THE CAPTAIN AT GUNPOINT TO OVERFLY TEL AVIV AND BEIRUT, AND THE AIRCRAFT, WITH 116 PEOPLE ON BOARD, REACHED DAMASCUS WITH LITTLE FUEL TO SPARE.

AS THE AIRCRAFT LANDED PASSENGERS WERE TOLD TO USE THE INFLATABLE EMERGENCY CHUTES BECAUSE OF A TIME-BOMB IN THE COCKPIT. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION AND THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS BLOWN OFF. NO-ONE WAS KILLED, BUT SEVERAL PASSENGERS WERE HURT WHILE JUMPING FROM THE AIRCRAFT.

THE POPULAR FRONT FOR THE LIBERATION OF PALESTINE CLAIMED THAT TWO OF THEIR MEMBERS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR HIJACKING THE AIRCRAFT. PASSENGERS ABOARD THE PLANE WERE TOLD OVER THE PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM: "THE CHE GUEVARA UNIT IS NOW IN COMMAND OF THE AIRCRAFT". AS THE AIRCRAFT FLEW NEAR TEL AVIV, ISRAELI FIGHTERS TRIED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO FORCE IT DOWN.

THE PASSENGERS AND CREW WERE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY BY THE SYRIAN AUTHORITIES AND MOST OF THEM WERE PUT UP IN A DAMASCUS HOTEL. BUT SIX ISRAELI PASSENGERS WERE DETAINED FOR QUESTIONING.

NEXT DAY (SATURDAY), MOST OF THE PASSENGERS AND CREW WERE TAKEN BY COACH BACK TO THE AIRPORT WHERE THEY WERE FLOWN TO ATHENS ABOARD A CHARTERED ITALIAN AIRLINER. BUT THE SIX ISRAELIS, THE TWA CAPTAIN, AND AN AMERICAN WOMAN WITH HER FOUR CHILDREN WERE DETAINED FURTHER BY THE AUTHORITIES.

THE WOMAN WAS INJURED AS SHE JUMPED FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THREE OF THE PASSENGERS WHO ARRIVED IN ATHENS-- A MAN AND TWO WOMEN-- HAD SUFFERED BROKEN ANKLES DURING THE EVACUATION OF THE PLANE.
