The even was part of the continuing series of World Cup races, in which Austria's Annemarie Proell-Moser has taken a commanding lead. The top Austrian skier could, however, manage only fifth place in Wednesday's race. West German star Rosi Mittermaier, Cindy Nelson from the United States and France's Fabienne Serrat, who currently occupy second, third and fourth World Cup placings, all finished outside the first ten.

Second in the race was Austria's Ingrid Schmid-Gfoelner, a full 1.3 seconds behind Miss Zurbriggen.

Continuity in the Austrian team's training schedule was threatened by the announcement that chief trainer Sigi Bernegger had resigned on Wednesday night. The coach had been criticised for his tough training methods and had clashed on several occasions with loading team members, including Proell-Moser.
