  • Description

The American Defence Secretary, Mr Melvin Laird, yesterday (Sunday) took a first-hand look at the progress of Vietnamisation with a visit to the South Vietnamese military base at Cu Chi, 20 miles northwest of Saigon.

Accompanied by the Commander of the American Forces in South Vietnam, General Abrams, the Defence Secretary was welcomed on arrival by Lieutenant General Do Cao Tri and an ARVN Guard of Honour.

Mr Laird arrived in South Vietnam on Friday primarily to assess the progress of the Vietnamisation programme and the military situation.

The Defence Secretary told newsmen at Cu Chi he was delighted with the progress made by the South Vietnamese military forces both in their military preparedness and in the pacification programme in the area.

After inspecting the guard of honour, Mr Laird attended a 45-minute briefing at Cu Chi. However, he said he would not be making further statements on American troop withdrawals from Vietnam during his current stay.

The large Cu Chi base with its seven-mile perimeter was handed over to the South Vietnamese Forces last December. It was formerly occupied by the U.S. 25th Infactry Division.
