    WEARY RESCUE WORKERS WERE PROBING MUD AND DEBRIS THIS MORNING (SUNDAY) FOR 150 PEOPLE STILL MISSING AFTER A FLASH FLOOD WHICH HAS KILLED AT LEAST 70 AND SWEPT AWAY MANY BUILDINGS IN THE DESERT TOWN OF MA'AN.

    THE AREA AROUND MA'AN, WHICH IS NORMALLY ARID, WAS SWEPT BY THE HEAVIEST RAINS IN MEMORY ON FRIDAY. A STORM, WHICH STARTED WITH HAILSTONES AS BIG AS HAZEL NUTS AND ENDED IN TORRENTIAL RAIN, RAGED FOR ABOUT FOUR HOURS, THE RAIN POURING FROM THE NEARBY HILLS CONVERGED ON THE TOWN OF MA'AN IN A WAVE SIX FOOT (2 MTS) HIGH. HALF THE TOWN IS NOW IN RUINS WITH ROADS DESTROYED AND TELEPHONE LINES CUT. SO FAR 70 HAVE BEEN REPORTED DEAD, 150 ARE STILL MISSING AND 3,000 ARE HOMELESS.

    KING HUSSEIN HAS BEEN PERSONALLY SUPERVISING THE RESCUE OPERATIONS. UNDAMAGED PUBLIC BUILDINGS ARE BEING USED TO HOUSE THE HOMELESS AND FOOD AND MOBILE HOSPITAL UNITS HAVE BEEN RUSHED TO THE AREA. KING HUSSEIN HAS GIVEN A DIRECTIVE TO THE GOVERNMENT TO USE ALL THEIR FACILITIES TO HELP THE VICTIMS.
