Background: United Sates Senator Edward Kennedy arrived in Cairo on Tuesday (18 November) at the end of a tour of Middle East capitals and a few hours later was summoned for talks with President Anwar Sadat.
The Democrat senator form Massechusettls arrived from Amman, where he had talks with Jordan's King Hussein, He was greeted at Cairo ariport by the United States Ambassador ot Egypt, Mr. Herman Eiltz, and went on for talks with the deput speaker of the People's Assembly (parliament).
During this meeting, President Sadat summoned Senator Kennedy for talks at his Nile River villa. Senator Kennedy was driven the 20 miles (32 kilometres) to the villa, which lies on an island across for bridges in the Nile delta.
Senator Kennedy said he had come to Cairo to seek ways in which the United States and Egypt could cooperate to provide opportunities for peace, and for American aid to Egypt.
Senator Kennedy was to leave for Lisben the following day for talks with Portugal's leaders.
