  • Description

ONLY TEN RETIREMENTS HAD BEEN REPORTED AS DRIVERS IN THE 36TH MONTE CARLO RALLY PREPARED FOR THEIR SECOND NIGHT ON THE ROAD BEFORE REACHING MONACO TOMORROW (MONDAY) AFTERNOON.

CONDITIONS ON THE ROUTES FROM THE EIGHT FAR-FLUNG STARTING POINTS ARE PROVING SO EASY THAT MOST OF THE 195 STARTERS - THE SMALLEST FIELD FOR MANY YEARS - SHOULD COMPLETE THE 1,900-MILE (3,000 KMS) DRIVE TO MONTE CARLO.

FIVE OF THE RETIREMENTS WERE AMONG THE MONTE CARLO STARTERS. TWO RHEIMS STARTERS RETIRED AND ONE EACH FROM DOVER, FRANKFURT AND ATHENS.

THE SURVIVORS ARE CONVERGING ON MONTE CARLO BY TWO ROUTES. THE CARS FROM FRANKFURT, RHEIMS, DOVER, LISBON AND MONTE CARLO LINK UP TONIGHT (SUNDAY) AT POITIERS, WESTERN FRANCE. THE OSLO, WARSAW AND ATHENS GROUPS WILL JOIN AT PADOVA, IN NORTHERN ITALY, TOMORROW.

THE 115 SURVIVORS FROM RHEIMS, DOVER AND FRANKFURT PASSED THROUGH THE MOYAUX CHECKPOINT, NEAR LISIEUX IN NORTHERN FRANCE, IN BRIGHT WEATHER.
