The Secretary of State for Scotland, Mr. Ma???lay, started the mechanism that drove home the first pile in the Forth road bridge project at Port Edgar, Scotland, Nov. 21. The inauguration was proceeded by a short service, conducted by Rev. A.D. Stirling, Minister of Queensferry Church, and prayers for protection of those who would work on the $15 million sterling suspension bridge.
The foundations of the Forth road bridge are only 1,000 yards from the smile and a half long railway bridge completed in 1890, after seven years work. This railway viaduct cost $3 million and 58 workmen's lives.
The new road bridge, the dream of Scotsmen for over a century and a half, is scheduled for completion by 1962, it will be the biggest suspension bridge in Europe and the fourth largest in the world.
