  • Description

AT LEAST EIGHT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED AND HUNDREDS INJURED IN CLASHES BETWEEN POLICE AND RIOTERS THROUGHOUT INDIA DURING A 24-HOUR STRIKE BY ABOUT 2,000,000 GOVERNMENT WORKERS. THE STRIKE, WHICH ENDED EARLY TODAY (FRIDAY), HAD BEEN PROHIBITED UNDER AN "ESSENTIAL SERVICE" ORDINANCE, AND POLICE USED GUNS AS WELL AS TEARGAS AND RIOT-STICKS AGAINST THE RIOTERS.

THE STRIKERS WERE DEMANDING A NEED-BASED MINIMUM WAGE, FULL NEUTRALISATION OF PRICE RISES, THE MERGER OF COST-OF-LIVING ALLOWANCES WITH BASIC PAY, AND JOB SECURITY. THE GOVERNMENT SAID THESE DEMANDS WERE OPEN TO NEGOTIATION, BUT THAT IF WAGE LEVELS OUTSTRIPPED AVAILABLE SUPPLIES OF GOOD AND CLOTHING PRICES WOULD BE FORCED UP. AT LEAST 4,000 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED THROUGHOUT INDIA FOR STRIKING OR INCITING OTHERS TO STRIKE.

HOWEVER, APART FROM DISRUPTION OF POSTAL SERVICES AND BUSINESS IN GOVERNMENT OFFICES, LIFE IN MOST PARTS OF INDIA WAS REPORTED NEAR-NORMAL, WITH ESSENTIAL SERVICES -- INCLUDING DEFENCE PRODUCTION, INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL AIR FLIGHTS AND OVERSEAS COMMUNICATION -- BEING MAINTAINED. IT'S REPORTED THAT MOST GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES APPEARED TO HAVE YIELDED TO GOVERNMENT THREATS OF FINES AND IMPRISONMENT, AND CALLS BY UNIONS SUPPORTING THE GOVERNING CONGRESS PARTY TO STAY AT WORK.
