  • Description

Czechoslovak Foreign Minister Jan Marko arrived in Brussels yesterday (Tuesday) for an official three-day visit to Belgium - the first to the West be an East European minister since the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Mr. Marko will hold talks on East-West relations with Belgian Foreign Minister Pierra Harmel who met him at the airport.

    M. Harmel's efforts through the NATO "Harmel Committee" towards better relations between the North Atlantic Alliance and the Warsaw Pact received a setback with last August's invasion of Czechoslovakia.

The foreign ministry in Belgium has said it is possible that M. Harmel will visit Moscow shortly, though they consult her NATO partner first.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Belgian Senate last week warned M. Harmel against giving the impression that Mr. Marko's visit implied Belgian acquiescence in the occupations of Czechoslovakia.

After being greeted at the airport by M. Harmel, the Czech Foreign Minister was received by King Baudouin.
