  • Description

IN KENYA, MASAI ELDERS AND MANY OF THEIR FOLLOWERS GATHERED AT NAROK, A MASAI AND KADU STRONGHOLD, 100 MILES WEST OF NAIROBI, JUNE 10, TO PROTEST AT WHAT THEY CONSIDER A "LET DOWN" BY THE BRITISH AND KENYA GOVERNMENTS ON THE WHITE HIGHLANDS QUESTION. THEY CLAIMED THAT UNDER THE MASAI TREATY, DECIDED AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY, THEY ALLOWED BRITISH SETTLERS TO FARM ON THEIR LANDS. BUT IN AN INDEPENDENT KENYA, THEY WILL BE OPPOSED TO OTHER TRIBES -- AMONG THEM THEIR TRADITIONAL FOES, THE KIKUYU-RESETTLING IN THESE AREAS WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT.

SPEAKERS APPEALED FOR "A VIGOROUS STRUGGLE TO HAVE THE MASAI LAND, TAKEN BY THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT FOR EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT, RETURNED TO ITS RIGHTFUL OWNERS, THE MASAI PEOPLE". OTHER SPEAKERS CALLED FOR SUPPORT OF KADU'S POLICY FOR "MAJIMBO" OR REGIONAL GOVERNMENT. "ANY FORM OF UNITARY GOVERNMENT IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE TO THE MASAI PEOPLE AND ANY MOVE TOWARDS CREATING A UNITARY GOVERNMENT IN KENYA WILL BE NULL AND VOID TO THE MASAI PEOPLE, WHO WILL DECLARE THEMSELVES AND THEIR ALLIES AN INDEPENDENT SOVEREIGN STATE," SAID ONE RESOLUTION, CARRIES BY THE GATHERING.
