  • Description

SIERRA LEONE'S ARMY CHIEF, BRIGADIER LANSANA, TODAY (WEDNESDAY) CLAMPED A NIGHT-TIME CURFEW ON FREETOWN AND ANNOUNCED THAT EVERY EFFORT WAS BEING MADE TO BRING IN A CONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNMENT AND END THE COUNTRY'S PRESENT POLITICAL CONFUSION. THE SUDDEN POLITICAL EMERGENCY IN SIERRA LEONE RESULTED IN A DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY'S HIGH COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE IN LONDON TODAY. A CROWD OF STUDENTS GROUPED OUTSIDE THE OFFICE AND SHOUTED SLOGANS AGAINST FORMER PRIME MINISTER SIR ALBERT MARGAI.

THE LONDON DEMONSTRATORS WETE APPARENTLY BLAMING SIR ALBERT MARGAI FOR THE RIOTING AND LOOTING LAST NIGHT IN WHICH AT LEAST FOUR PEOPLE WERE KILLED.

THE VIOLENCE FLARED SHORTLY AFTER THE ARMY DETAINED MR SIAKA STEVENS, FORMER OPPOSITION LEADER AND NEWLY SWORN-IN PRIME MINISTER, WHO WAS TODAY STILL HELD AT THE ARMY-RINGED STATE HOUSE.

AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM BRIGADIER LANSANA BROADCAST TODAY SAID THAT "AS SOON AS POLITICIANS COME TOGETHER, THERE WILL BE A CONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNMENT FOR THE NATION."
THE ARMY CHIEF SUMMONED ALL NEWLY-ELECTED MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT TO FREETOWN TO TRY AND UNRAVEL THE CHAOTIC SITUATION BROUGHT BY LAST FRIDAY'S INDECISIVE GENERAL ELECTIONS. THESE LEFT A VERY UNCLEAR PICTURE OF THE RELATIVE STRENGTH OF SIR ALBERT MARGAI AND MR STEVENS IN THE NEW 78-SEAT PARLIAMENT.

SPOKESMEN FOR MR STEVENS' PARTY - THE ALL PEOPLES CONGRESS, CHARGED THAT THE ARMY ACTION WAS A LAST ATTEMPT TO SAVE SIR ALBERT MARGAI, WHOSE SIERRA LEONE PEOPLES PARTY HAD RULED THE WEST AFRICAN COMMONWEALTH COUNTRY SINCE BEFORE INDEPENDENCE IN 1961.

OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED FIGURES FOR THE ELECTIONS TONIGHT GAVE NO CLEAR PICTURE OF THE POSITION IN THE NEW PARLIAMENT, WHICH, AMONG OTHER THINGS COULD DECIDE WHETHER THE COUNTRY IS TO BECOME A REPUBLIC IN THE FUTURE.
