  • Description

The President of Gabon, M. Albert-Bernard Bongo, has announced he will saver his country's trade links with Rhodesia and confirmed his opposition to a detente policy with South Africa and Rhodesia.

President Bongo gave the news during a visit to Gabon by a delegation of the African National Congress of South Africa, led by its President Mr. Oliver Tambo.

In a communique President Bongo said he recognised that despite United Nations economic sanctions, Gabon had continued to export meat to Rhodesia.

The President said Gabon has acted to end " in future and at the opportune moment" its remaining economic ties with Rhodesia "given the prevailing economic situation"
After the visit, Gabon took the unusual step of placing advertisement in newspapers in Europe to re-affirm the country was firmly opposed to any dialogue with South Africa and Rhodesia.

This followed what Gabon called "defamatory press reports" The advertisement said Gabon had always recognised the legality of sanctions against Rhodesia. And had always respected them except for essential meat exports which it would case " at the opportune moment"
The advertisement said the United Kingdom was responsible for preparing Rhodesia for independence and should call a constitutional conference on the basis of one man one vote.

Meanwhile the Gabonese Embassy in Paris, France, said Gabon was totally committed to the liberation of the African continent and would play host to the summit meeting of the Organisation of African Unity (O.A.O.) in 1977
This year the O.A.U. summit is taking place in Kampala, where the president of Uganda, Field Marshal Idi Amin, has already called on other African nations to liberate South Africa.
