    One of the two main opposition alliances to President General Hossain Mohammad Ershad's military government held a rally in Dhaka on April 8.The group, led by Sheikh Hasina Wazed, and another anti-government group of seven parties, led by Begum Khaleda Zia, are primarily opposed to the president's plan to hold both presidential and parliamentary elections on May 27.On April 9, President Ershad met opposition leaders, including Sheikh Wazed, at his palace to discuss their objections.The opposition wants Ershad, who came to power in March 1982, to hold parliamentary elections first.Since February of this year, 439 political prisoners, including eight former ministers, have been release on the president's orders in an effort to create a more congenial atmosphere between himself and the opposition groups.Prime Minister Ataur Rahman Khan has said it was the politicians who were delaying the implementation of the election plans.
