  • Description

Five thousand spectators cheered themselves hoarse as the cream of Congo-Kinshasa's amateur boxers staged a hard-hitting gala in the capital last week.

Curtain-raiser to the programme at the Park of the Revolution was an all-action scrap between Tshibangu, of the University, and Tshinga.

Though Tshibangu distinguished himself by his ringcraft early in the bout, the issue was in doubt until the final round.

Then Tshinga unleashed a battery of punches to fight his way to an explosive victory -- and was chaired out of the ring by jubilant fans.

The Star bout of the evening was between Baudouin Ossumba, trained in Belgium, and the young Francis Mamba who has already built up a big following in Congoless boxing circles.

Despite his almost legendary aggressiveness, Mamba was frequently forced into the retreat by the style and speed of his opponent. He only gained the decision of the judges on the strength of a storming finish -- a decision openly deplored by the crowd who felt a draw would have been the fairest result.
