  • Description

EARLY IN THE MORNING OF THE 26TH SEPT, THE BODY OF MR. HAMMARSKJOELD WAS TAKEN ABOARD A CANADAIR OF THE ROYAL RHODESIAN AIRFORCE FOR THE START OF THE JOURNEY TO UPPSALA SWEDEN.

THE COFFIN WAS TO BE HONOURED IN SALISBURY AND IN GENEVA ON THE WAY TO ITS LAST RESTING PLACE.

THE IST BATTALION NORTHERN RHODESIAN REGIMENT, WITH BAND PROVIDED FULL HONOURS AS THE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED NATIONS AND THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS PAID THEIR RESPECTS AT NDOLA AIRPORT. AFTER CEREMONIES IN SALISBURY, THE COFFIN ARRIVED BY AIR AT COINTRIN AIRPORT, GENEVA. HERE RESPECTS WERE PAID BY CIVIC OFFICIALS OF THE CITY, AND OFFICIALS FROM THE UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS IN GENEVA.

MEANWHILE, IN THE CONGO, THE MYSTERY OF THE PLANE-CRASH IN WHICH MR. HAMMARSKJOELD DIED HAS BECOME MORE INTENSE. THE RHODESIAN CIVIL AVIATION DIRECTOR, LIEUT-COLONEL M.C.H. BARBER QUOTING SWEDISH EXPLOSIVES EXPERT MAJOR C.F. WESTRELL, HAS REPORTED THAT "AMMUNITION FOR RIFLES, HEAVY MACHINE GUNS, AND PISTOLS CANNOT, WHEN HEATED BY FIRE, EJECT BULLETS WITH SUFFICIENT FORCE FOR THE BULLETS TO GET INTO A HUMAN BODY." THUS, BULLETS REPORTEDLY FOUND IN THE BODIES OF OTHER MEMBERS OF THE PARTY ABOARD THE PLANE AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH COULD NOT HAVE BEEN 'FIRED' THERE BY THE HEAT OF THE PLANE'S BURNING.

A SPOKESMAN OF THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS OF THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT IN NEW DELHI SEPTEMBER 26TH DESCRIBED AS 'FANTASTIC' AND ABSURD' THE ALLEGATIONS MADE IN SOME INDIAN NEWSPAPERS OF BRITISH GOVERNMENT COMPLICITY IN THE DEATH OF THE FORMER SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS.
