Soccer ... and on Wednesday night (November 8) France entertained Spain in a friendly match between two teams who played at this year's World Cup Finals in Argentina. The home side won 1-0, thanks to a goal just before half-time.
SYNOPSIS: The match took place at the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris. It was the first meeting between the two sides in the French capital since 1959. The French team playing in light shirts found it difficult to counter the similar style of the dark-shirted Spaniards.
The French had a number of promising attacks early in the first half, but the strong Spanish defence kept them out, encouraged by thousands of the Spanish community in Paris.
A free kick taken by Didier Six just before half-time was converted at the far post when defender Leonard Specht's header crept between the legs of Spanish goalkeeper Miguel Angel. The Spanish keeper had been playing well, but his error was the signal for celebrations by the French crowd.
Juanito nearly silenced their cheers but shot wide from the restart.
In the second half Spain came forward looking for an equaliser. From this corner Del Bosque shot just over the bar.
Although they were a goal ahead the French side found it difficult to assert their superiority over the Spaniards. As they pushed forward, they left themselves exposed of swift counter attacks by their skilful opponents. In this move Spanish substitute Leal's shot was well saved by Dropsy, who had a good game in the French goal.
The manger of the French side, Michel Hidalgo, used substitutes in an attempt to increase his side's lead. But at the end of ninety minutes, the forty thousand crowd had to be satisfied with a single-goal victory over their arch rivals.
