Background: BILL BAILLIE, NEW ZEALANDER'S "IRON MAN" OF LONG DISTANCE RUNNING, BROKE EMIL ZATOPEK'S 12-YEAR-OLD WORLD RECORD FOR THE 20,000 METRES AND ONE HOUR ON AUCKLAND'S LOVELOCK TRACK LAST SATURDAY.

IN A SPECIAL RECORD ATTEMPT THE NEW ZEALANDER CUT 23 SECONDS OFF ZATOPEK'S 20,000 METRES TIME BY CLOCKING 59 MINUTES 28.6 SECONDS. IN THE HOUR BAILLIE COVERED 12 MILES 960 YARDS (20,189.8 METRES).

SIX NEW ZEALANDERS AND SIX JAPANESE, CURRENTLY TRAINING IN NEW ZEALAND, TOOK PART IN THE RACE ON THE BITUMEN TRACK. THEY KNEW THAT TO BEAT THE RECORD THEY WOULD HAVE TO AVERAGE 72 SECONDS PER LAP. ALL THE ATHLETES COMPETING WERE NOTABLE RUNNERS, AMONG THEM NEW ZEALAND'S OLYMPIC BRONZE MEDALLIST BARRY MAGEE (NO. 9), NEVILLE SCOTT (NO. 11), AND JEFF JULCAN, NEW ZEALAND MARATHON CHAMPION. BAILLIE WAS WEARING NUMBER 17.

THEY COVERED THE FIRST MILE IN 4 MINUTES 43 SECONDS AND BY THE 5-MILE MARK WERE ONLY 1 SECOND OFF THE CALCULATED TIME TO BEAT THE RECORD. BY THE TEN MILE MARK, COVERED IN 48 MINUTES 10 SECS, THE RACE DEVELOPED BETWEEN JAPAN'S K. TSIRBURAYA AND BAILLIE. AT THIS POINT BAILLIE WENT TO THE FRONT AND RELENTLESSLY REELED OFF THE REMAINING LAPS AT ABOUT 68 SECONDS A LAP. HE BROKE THE TAPE WELL AHEAD OF TSIRBURAYA WHO FINISHED FOUR SECONDS INSIDE ZATOPEK'S OLD RECORD.

THE RECORD HAS NOT YET BEEN OFFICIALLY RATIFIED BY THE INTERNATIONAL BOARD GOVERNING ATHLETIC RECORDS. THE BOARD IS CURRENTLY CONSIDERING WHETHER RACES ON HARD SERVICES, SUCH AS BITUMEN, RATHER THAN GRASS OF CINDERS, CAN BE RECOGNISED. IT IS LIKELY TO BE SOME MONTHS BEFORE THEIR DECISION IS KNOWN.
