  • Description

In Leopoldville, Oct 14, a group of Lumumba supporters attacked and seriously wounded Albert Ndele, Vice-President of Colonel Mobutu's student government, as he emerged from an hotel after giving a press conference.

In his press conference, Mr Ndele - flanked by two other officials of the Mobutu "High Commission" - set out a number of policy points. He said the Congo was ready to co-operate with Belgium
which could contribute more than any other country to the Congo's
recovery. Although he opposed colonialism and communism, Mr Ndele declared the Congo Republic could have normal diplomatic relations with communist countries if they would refrain from mixing in its affairs.

Stating that the Congo Government must get together with Katanga to secure the province's financial support, Mr Ndele asked the Press to report less sensationally on events in the Congo. He said: "The Congolese people are profoundly tired of political quarrels and only wish for an improvement in their material situation and an effective state of civic liberty".

When Mr Ndele left the hotel, several men attacked him with knives and tried to drag him into a waiting car. As he stood with blood streaming from his head, an American businessman pulled him back into the hotel. The attackers escaped. Soon afterwards, a dozen young Africans were picked up from a pavement cafe near by and bundled into a truck by Congolese troops.

The following day another kidnapping incident occurred in the city, when six civilians dragged an African into a car after knocking him unconscious.
