Background: President Mobutu Sese Sako of Zaire arrived in Cairo on Saturday (16 February) to start a week-long official visit to Egypt.
He was received at Cairo Airport by President Anwar Sadat and sanior Egyptian officials.
President Mobutu's visit is one of a series of visits by African leaders to Egypt and the other Arab countries aimed at consolidating Afro-Arab co-operation.
President Mobutu was guest of honour at a dinner given by President Sadat on Saturday night. At the dinner, the Egyptian President pledged to continue efforts for the liberation of all Arab territories.
He described the Zaire President as "a nationalist leader who devoted his life to the service of African causes with the same zeal and wisdom with which he is serving his country".
President Mobutu asked the guests to stand and observe one minute silence for those "heroes who fell in action" during the October war against Israel".
The Zaire President also called for a strengthening of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and for a review of the trade agreement signed 10 years ago between Zaire and Egypt.
