Background: Bird Island, a sanctuary in Jakarta Bay for many Indonesian species and stopover point for thousands of birds migrating between Australia and Asia, may be threatened by a proposed new international airport.

Lying nearly 20 miles (25 kms) offshore, Bird Island will be in the flight path to the proposed Cengkareng airport, anticipated to one day take over from Jakarta's Halim airport for all international traffic.

For the moment, Bird Island is a peaceful sanctuary. Visitors must obtain a special permit from the Forestry Department to land on it. Two permanent guards keep intruders away.

Covered with dense vegetation and with a good water supply, the island has been home for thousands of birds from thirty Indonesian species for more than a century. They include the black cormorant, the anhingga and white agretta (egrets).

Several migratory species use the island for several weeks each year to rest on their annual journey between Australia and South East Asia.

The Chairman of the Crnithological Society of Indonesia, Mr. Kamil, says it's unclear at the moment just how much the proposed airport will affect the birds. Some species could adjust to the new environment but he fears others will be sucked into the jet engines.
