Background: The bad weather spell which hit Britain on Christmas eve (December 24) continues. Freezing fog over much of the country has caused chaos on the roads and at airports; and at Pegwell Bay in Kent, the edge of the North Sea was frozen.

At London's Heathrow Airport, over four-thousand passengers were stranded when 75 flights has to be cancelled. Visibility was down to twenty yards (meters) and an Airport spokesman said the fog is likely to persist tomorrow. Incoming flights were diverted to Manchester in the north.

The fog and ice made driving conditions all over the country hazardous. On a major motorway in the north two accidents involved a dozen vehicles but there were no serious injuries. In places visibility was down to ten yards (meters).

In Kent, which has seen much of the worst weather, it was so cold that the North Sea froze in Pegwell Bay. The ice was strong enough for a young boy to walk on. The cold weather is expected to continue in Britain for the next three days followed by a warmer period. But more cold weather is expected to follow the slight relaxation.
