  • Description

Film-makers in the United States are enjoying their biggest boom for ten years.

Hollywood producers are mounting lavish productions in an effort to draw people away from television screens. They are using the biggest stars, expensive sets and lots of spectacular action ... and they are now succeeding in bringing people back to the silver screen.

In the United States 20 million people went to the cinema every week during 1974. Receipts for the year show a 20-per-cent jump over last year -- to 1,700 million U.S. dollars (709 million Sterling).

Industry spokesmen say people go to the movies to forget the problems of inflation and recession.

The largest boom-times in the cinema industry were in the 1930's (during the Great Depression) and again in the 1950's when auditoria filled to record levels during a recession.
