    THE FORMER BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR. GEORGE BROWN, YESTERDAY WARNED THAT BRITAIN AND AMERICA COULD BE DEALING WITH MAJOR CONFLICTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST LONG AFTER THE VIETNAM CONFLICT HAS ENDED.

    MR. BROWN WAS GUEST OF HONOUR AT THE AMERICAN FOUNDATION ON AUTOMATION AND EMPLOYMENT.

    IN HIS REMARKS ABOUT VIETNAM, MR. BROWN SAID HE HAD SUPPORTED THE AMERICAN ROLE AS FOREIGN SECRETARY AND WOULD CONTINUE TO DO SO. HE DID NOT ARGUE, HE SAID, FOR ESCALATION, BUT CONSIDERED A SIMPLE UNITED STATES WITHDRAWAL WOULD BE AN ACT OF 'ISOLATIONISM'.

    TURNING TO THE MIDDLE EAST MR. BROWN SAID.
